The Brownstone on West 53rd Street Lora Mitchell 9781329664388 Books Reviews
Lora Mitchell’s well written-memoir, The Brownstone On West 53Rd Street, Rehearsal Club Memoir, is an eye opener into the show business world in which she worked. The book is heart-warming even through the sometimes emotional distress and you see clearly through Lora’s eyes how life just moves you forward no matter what happens. We all heard about the hardships and demands on women models and actresses and I never acquainted it to my own teen years, but this book puts you right there and you see that there are comparisons that all young women share.
For me, I was taken back to a time in my life, that at the time, I never knew I would miss. NOT that I had an exciting life, far from it, especially with Lora’s opportunity to work with the famous in her industry. But there were similarities in the innocence of youth, the friendships that were formed with women, men and teachers, the hard work and studying, and going full steam ahead while not knowing what to expect, and enjoying life. While many people around me only dreamed of having such a life it was a world we all knew about among my friends and family just living 13 miles away over the George Washington Bridge in Paterson, New Jersey.
I sincerely enjoyed this book like none other I have ever read! ~JD
This is a delightful book that I couldn't put down. I read it cover to cover in one sitting. Lora's story of her life in a New York City Brownstone living with the Rockettes and others was so entertaining. I loved hearing insider information on Johnny Carson, too. What I liked best was how the author described her life and the characters she met. I love New York City and thoroughly enjoyed the book.
This book was so entertaining! It was like a time machine that transports you straight to the 60's. Although I don't remember alot about that decade, Lora's literary skills made me feel like I was with her as she traveled down memory lane.
Lora Mitchell's memoir is absolutely charming and delightful. I was also at the Rehearsal Club during that time, and everything she writes about is spot on! How ingenious of Lora to keep a diary during those magical times. Lora is one of the lucky ones. She not only succeeded, she succeeded with her integrity intact! Kudos to you, Lora!
I was completely taken back to my first years in NYC, early '60's, when living at the Rehearsal Club. Lora Mitchell remembers so vividly those fascinating days we all experienced with our dreams of stardom living in that safe haven, the Rehearsal Club...experiencing all the fascinating, thrilling experiences in the Big Apple! I thank Lora Mitchell for transporting us all back to those wonderful days! I wish they would make a movie of this!!
A Lovely Nostalgic Trip into the world of Show Business in the Marvelous years of the 1969's and 70's where the Theater World was in High Gear! Coming to New York to pursue a Career was so Exciting and Lora captures that Wonderful Time! Also, THAT NYC was quite different from this present one and I remember it well! Also ALL the Wonderful Teachers that were around to help teach us and guide us on our Journey,
And then, there was The Rehearsal Club, a gem in itself and all the Gals that were fortunate to have spent time in that Special Place!.
It was a Great Ride and Read! Enjoy!
Lots of fun! BROWNSTONE took me back to my life in the 60's & to the excitement of my own NYC (when I moved here in the 70's.) I Loved hearing of Lora's bond with her Rehearsal Club girlfriends & their plethora of highs & lows while trying to make it in this sometimes heartless show biz city. Oh & the acting & dance teachers! I really enjoyed learning about their techniques, over-the-top personalities & Lora's experiences with them! Makes me want to go back & watch the film "Stage Door" again as it was BASED on this big old brownstone called the Rehearsal Club.
It left me wanting more, more, more so I hope Ms. Mitchell follows up with MANY MORE of her NYC life adventures!
